After the meal, the guests move outside to enjoy a bonfire with some of the guides and Andres. I follow along, mostly just because Mateo is going to be there. He smiles when he sees me, pressing a kiss to my forehead and handing me a new glass of fernet con coca before heading over to help Andres.

Mateo looks sexy as sin as he piles logs onto the fire, moving around in his low-slung jeans, his arm muscles bulging against the short, tight sleeves of his shirt. His eyes are full of heat and promises when he gazes across the growing fire at me with a look that doesn’t hide any of his thoughts. I flush hot all over, unable to look away.

He’s going to do dirty, dirty things to me tonight. And I am so here for it.

The seduction just worsens once we’re all settled around the fire. Andres reaches over for an acoustic guitar and hands it to Mateo with a sly grin. Mateo groans but accepts the guitar anyway.

“Ya’ll want to hear a song?” he asks, his love of country music showing in an adorable mimic of a southern drawl.

Everyone around the fire encourages him, but his eyes are only for me. He lifts an eyebrow that seems to repeat his question.

“What can you play?” I ask.

“What are you in the mood for?”

“Surprise me?”

“Mmm.” His eyes roam over my face as his fingers lazily strum along the guitar. Then he ducks his head and looks at his fingers, the strumming turning more purposeful as he picks up a particular tune.

My heart catches at the sound of his low, raspy voice as he begins singing about working at a farm, the song a long forgotten one I remember my dad crooning as he’d clean the house on Sundays. Deana Carter. He switches out the pronouns to make it a song about two men, no one around the fire seeming to notice, or at least not caring.

I find myself mesmerized by the way his voice shakes when he raises it for the chorus, his neck straining with the power of the words. I’m stuck in the moment. Trapped in the beauty that is Mateo. I can’t tear my gaze away. Even when my eyes start to burn with tears as he sings about sending letters and making phone calls, only to drift away like the leaves in the fall.

It’s over too soon and not soon enough as he finishes it off with a roaring voice and harsher strums. A tear rolls down my cheek when I blink. He sees it. I know he does because his fingers falter just before the song is actually supposed to end.

The crowd erupts in applause, song names being called out now as people request more. I can feel Mateo’s gaze on the side of my face, but I keep my eyes locked onto the fire. He clears his throat before catering to the crowd by beginning a new song, one the woman across from us asked for.
